In the Book Vicomte de Bragelonne, d’Artagnan dies some ten years later after the events presented in The Man in the Iron Mask. Therefore the changes did nothing to change how people perceive that history, however, the changes did have an impact in the way people related to the film. A new ending gave a new meaning to the whole story. D’Artagnan comes out as the tragic hero at the end of the movie, while in the book, it is not so clear what his role was.
